HELPING GAMBLING ADDICTS ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

Christmas can be a tough time for people struggling to control their gambling, especially in a pandemic that has increased common risks of isolation and money worries. We also know that online gambling is particularly prevalent in the sports sector among men aged 35-44. To tackle this, we needed to create a behaviour change campaign with the purpose of making help as easily available as possible for those struggling, whilst also encouraging conversation.

We launched the TalkBanStop campaign in December to offer three free tools to help people stop gambling via promoting GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline, Gamban blocking software and GAMSTOP self-exclusion. The three services came together based on the principle that a combination of practical tools as well as support and treatment are essential to those affected by and at risk of gambling problems.

So, we developed a fully integrated campaign, featuring real-life people who have recovered from gambling harms along with a captivating and personal quote to help gamblers self-identify that they may need help.

We also delivered a PR campaign to launch the pilot service. We created a video of former gambling addict and successful footballer Michael Chopra to raise the profile of the issue based on his personal experiences and support for the campaign’s services. This engaging conversation between Michael and a fellow ex-gambler highlights not just the problem, but more importantly how the recovery journey starts.
